Ophthalmic Technician

Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Making patients feel welcome to the clinic.

  • Demonstrates expert ability in communicating with patients the purpose of the exam and all pertinent testing.

  • Working up patients for the Optometrist and Ophthalmologist: Acquiring history, visual acuity, gross visual fields by confrontation, ocular motility, pupil assessment, and intraocular pressure.

  • Operation and maintenance of all pretesting equipment including but not limited to:

    • Lensometer

    • Auto-refractor / keratometer

    • iCare tonometer

    • Retinal camera

    • Automated visual field perimeter

    • Corneal topographer

    • Optical Coherence Tomographer (OCT)

    • Visual acuity tests

    • Blood pressure cuff

    • Pupilometer

    • Optomap ultra-wide field imaging

    • Zeiss IOL master

    • A-scan ultrasound biometer

    • Corneal pachymeter

    • Slit lamp biomicroscope

    • Goldmann applanation tomometry

  • Stocking and maintenance of all exam rooms

  • Write up of spectacle and contact lens prescriptions per the provider’s specifications, as well as assisting with generation of medication prescriptions.

  • Assisting providers with minor medical procedures.

  • Manifest refractions.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school diploma, or equivalent

  • Computer skills, including Microsoft Office and general computer knowledge

  • Minimum two years of previous work experience


Physical Requirements:

  • This job operates in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, and filing cabinets.

  • This position requires continual movement about the clinic to accompany patients and accomplish other necessary tasks.

  • This position requires communicating with others effectively to exchange information.

  • Must be able to lift up to 20 pounds
